I’m researching a new book and allowing myself free rein to dip into the brilliant minds of other authors.
This week I finished ‘Evermore’ by Alyson Noel, the first book in her YA series - ‘The Immortals’. I’m also embracing Harlan Coben’s ‘Promise Me’, and an old classic ‘On Writing Well’ by William Zinsser.
When I’m actively writing I have to stay ‘in my zone’ and most of the time don’t have the luxury of reading other books. But I’m surging ahead into becoming an active reader for the next month.
What do you do when you need to energize and refresh your brain?

I read constantly – it’s my lifelong addiction. So when I need to refill the well, I have to do something different…like leave the house.
I’ll go for a walk in a public garden or to an intriguing talk at the university or even something that’s kind of out of my comfort zone, where I have to talk to people I don’t know, like a party.
Right now I’m attending a series of lectures about rock art by an eminent French archaeologist. He’s incredibly knowledgeable and great at explaining things – and he’s entertaining!
Like Rachel, I need to do something other than reading and writing to fill the well. This fall, believe it or not, I’m learning to speak Finnish. Not that I expect to be terribly fluent by the end of the class, but my brain is sure getting a good workout!
