She’s a young woman who harbours many secrets. Stanley Island in the gorgeous Pacific Northwest is her chosen place of refuge and she works there as a breakfast cook.
She’s escaping from her past but she finds solace and contentment in the early morning hours of a diner, as she bakes for the breakfast rush.
In many romance novels, women gravitate towards operating bed and breakfasts or lodges or restaurants and food preparation is involved. Those stories appeal to me and I’m wondering why I continue to find those plot lines so satisfying.
And then really, I don’t have to ponder this issue too long. I enjoy getting up early and breakfast is my favourite meal of the day. If I have a leisurely morning, then I can take my time and be creative. Like my heroine Lily, I like to try different recipes and ideally serve them to others.
Early morning baking has many rewards. The lush aroma of muffins, scones, waffles, pancakes etc. is a great way to tantalize a hungry loved one or guest. Then there’s also the added magic of creating something delicious from simple ingredients.
Lily enjoys making her customers smile and takes pleasure in serving them tasty food. I think that her goal is commendable. In many romance novels, the heroine is able to discover happiness in her new role of cooking and along the way, (hopefully, finding her Happy Ever After).
Do you take pleasure in cooking/baking? Do you enjoy preparing food for family or friends? Do you like novels with a food focus? I’d love to hear from you.
