Filtering Out the Noise

sad-2019926_1920Lately it has become difficult, sometimes impossible for me to remain removed from the tragedy of world events. What’s happening ‘out there’ all over the world is heart-breaking.

Living in the province of Quebec for a number of years I was exposed to chaotic, theatrical and unusual politics. But those issues pale in contrast to what I’m reading, witnessing and absorbing now.

I’m supposed to be immersed in my story – but when I take a break, and turn on the radio, or TV or phone then I’m assaulted again by yet another instance of hate.

What can a writer do when all of my emotions are under attack? I’ve had to devise ways of protecting myself from the everyday horrors of the daily news.

  • I have arranged for no-media days.  That’s tougher than you think when I rely on social media to keep current in the publishing world.
  • I choose to write first, early in the morning. This works because then I feel at least that my mind hasn’t been poisoned by the latest news cycle.
  • I try to surround myself with positive people.
  • I limit my discussion of politics.
  • When I’m really upset, I head to my garden porch, sit in a rocking chair, survey my flowers and drink tea. I remind myself of everything that I have in my life. Family, friends and my bubble of love.
  • I light candles and set up my room diffuser with an essential oil. Right now, I’m using one called ‘Unwind’.
  • I look for novels that have encouraging and positive endings. We need that right now. I believe that is why readers are attracted to romance novels. They are given hope.
  • How are you managing in these chaotic times?


  1. Interesting topic Jodie. I struggle with this constantly. Should I ignore the news and probably feel less stressed or stay up to date and be somewhat informed. I know the “Bushman” reads the paper but he’s a pretty laid back kind of guy.? I might try your news free day to see what happens but then I’d have to quit twitter which I’m pretty much addicted to.

    1. The Bushman studies his favourite on-line newspapers – so he’s informed. Then he has the ability to let it go and then he plays pickleball or goes fishing. He has great ways of removing himself from all of the political angst. I have to try harder, that’s for sure.
      Stepping away from the news is hard. I enjoy Twitter as well, as everything is so current. Thanks for stopping by.

  2. Lovely blog, Jodi. I completely agree with you. It can be very hard not to be impacted by events in the world, particularly if you follow the news, as I do (and you clearly do too). Your ideas of taking no-media days and writing first thing in the morning are solid. So is the wonderful habit of surveying your garden and counting your blessings. We all need to do that, especially in these difficult times!

    1. Thanks Laura. I’ve been kind of a political junkie but I’ve had to step away for my own peace of mind. I keep thinking ‘this too shall pass’ and hopefully, it will. I love my garden. And that’s what I have control over. More or less. So it’s a good reminder to focus on the smaller things, the smaller moments of life. Thanks for commenting.

    2. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Staying away from the news is a tough act. But it appears that it is a strategy that has to be utilized from time to time. And taking the time to pause and be thankful is a requirement as well.

  3. You sound like you have some great coping strategies and I think that’s the key. Shit happens but there’s a lot of good in our lives and that’s what we need to focus on.

    create peace around you: read good books, be with good friends and sip tea on your porch. Nice.

    1. Getting outside in nature happens to work. And creating time for tea is a pleasure too. I can’t imagine what it must be like to work in Washington, D.C. right now regardless of one’s political affiliation.

  5. Hi Jodie, great blog. i feel much the same way, and it saps my ability to concentrate and my energy level. Good ideas on how to handle it. I especially like the one of working first thing in the morning before you are distracted and disturbed by other events.

    1. The news is so unsettling that I’ve had to create ways to keep myself sane. And blocking it out is tricky but it is a strategy that I’m trying to use. Thanks for stopping by!
